“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Revelation 3:20
Do you hear a knock?
Close your eyes. Now imagine sitting in your house reading a book, watching tv, or scrolling through amazon. Suddenly you hear a soft but deliberate knock at your door. What is the first thing that comes to your mind? Perhaps its panic because you are in your comfy clothes that no one outside of the house will ever see. Perhaps you are annoyed thinking it’s a salesperson or a pesky neighbor. If you are like me, my first thoughts are all of those. I jump up and go to the door and carefully look through the peep hole to see who it is. Is it someone I need to open the door? Do I freeze in place, pretending that no one is home?
Now perhaps that person is Jesus, in person. Wow, just typing that, I felt that. I think, I would probably panic all the same. Is the house a mess? Will He shake His head in disapproval of the sink full of dirty dishes. Goodness, I think, I wish I would have vacuumed and dusted. Why would Jesus be coming to MY door? I think, we naturally all would feel that same sense of vulnerability. Our house is personal to us. It’s is a representative of who we are, what we like, what we value.
So, Jesus is on the other side of the door, do I open it to Him? Do I let Him see the real me?
The scripture goes on to read, that Jesus will come into your home and He will share a meal with you as friends.
My best friend, who is like my sister, will call me up after leaving work and says, I need to see you now. She may have something going on and just needs to talk. There is a closeness to our friendship, that I don’t worry about the condition of my house. If it’s messy or if I’m in my pj’s. She doesn’t care either and doesn’t judge me for it. Because she loves me regardless of my mess.
So we go back to the Scripture. We know this scripture is an illustration of what happens when Jesus comes knocking on the door to our heart. He just wants us to open the door so He can come have dinner and just be with us. This is the kind of intimacy that Jesus longs for with us. We are so worried that Jesus will reject our mess. We are so worried that He will reject…us. We think, that everything has to be pristine in our lives for Jesus to want to be part of it. The only response, Jesus wants from us us in this scripture, is to hear Him and open the door. Perhaps, Jesus is the one bringing the food to our house because His hands are never empty. He always has something to give to us.
This scripture not only humbles me, but lets me know how much I am truly loved by Jesus. He wants to be my friend. He wants to talk with me and wants to listen to me. I want that intimacy with Jesus. I want to keep my ear tuned to hear His knock and open the door wide even if I had a bad day, even if I feel broken, or even if I got it all wrong that day. I believe Jesus can handle those situations and maybe, just maybe, like my best friend, He knows I needed Him to come over and hang out with me.
He loves you and just wants to spend time with you. Will you open the door?
